Sunday, October 22nd, 2000 - “Peace Sabbath”

Job is confronted by what he does not know about creation and the Creator.  Jesus told his disciples that they must learn what he has for them – that following God’s way will ask more than they know.  As we consider what makes for peace on this Peace Sabbath we would do well to realise that it may cost more than we know.  Yet, failing to seek peace may cost even more than we can imagine.

If you would like to stay seated for any or all of the “standing” parts of the service, please feel free to do so.

Call to Worship (Responsive) Based on Jim Taylor’s version of Psalm 104

One:        When the universe first exploded,

All:      O God, you were there.

One:        When the spinning galaxies scattered through space,

All:      O God, you were there.

One:        When the solar system strung its diamond necklace in the sky,

All:      O God, you were there.

One:        When life emerged on one frail planet,

All:      O God, you were there.

One:        When the spirit of holiness lived among us,

All:      O God, you were there.  Without you O God, we would be nothing.

We Remain in God’s Presence Through Confession

Prayer of Confession (Unison)

God, you are the Source of Peace.  We turn to you now.  At times we are not at peace with ourselves, much less with each other. Broken relationships hurt us and separate us from one another. Angry words wound us deeply.  Grudges held on to fester and never heal.  In our world, conflict rages as those who seek more power ignore human life and dignity.  Creator God, we turn to you.  Mend our spirits with your gentleness.  Teach us how to love each other as you would have us love.  Help us to become makers of peace…(Silent Confession)

Assurance of Pardon (One)
